Quilts are the arena in which I dance between balance and instability. Large-scale and strong, quilts correlate with the body and provide the framework for my artistic thinking. Although mine are intended to be objects of visual attention, I love their relationship to utility. I am inspired by the forms and inadvertent structures of industrial and construction landscapes, by tools used and reused, never intended to be the focus of an action and yet absolutely essential to its completion.

My quilts are two-dimensional sculptures, rather than images. They are constructions informed by action, not design: scaffolding, stacking, bridging, branching, connecting. Free from templates, patterns or rulers, they are nevertheless rigorous in their evolution. My improvisational work is the continual practice of seeking a level, then changing the conditions and seeking it anew. In this way, the work displays a logic of being in the world, of maintaining balance in a constantly shifting environment.
